Podcast #160: “Even If” by MercyMe

Finding Faithfulness in Daniel 3

We can hide behind convenient truth when things are swell, but when our feet are to the fire the deep truth tends to come out. Will we be willing to log years of faithfulness such that our circumstances no longer define God’s ability or position in our minds? “Even If” by MercyMe leads us to a powerful “even if” moment in Scripture.

What can we learn from three friends in a foreign land?

On this episode I discuss:

  • Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture – this week’s Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include
    • Reading in context
    • Reviewing introductions to books of the Bible
    • Consider the historical context
  • Introduction to the Book of Daniel – BlueLetterBible.org
  • The background of the three friends highlighted in Daniel 3
  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s position in the province of Babylon – Daniel 2:49
  • Despite their wisdom and faithful service to the king, there were those waiting to tattle on the friends – Daniel 3:8
  • What the friends chose to direct their attention to
  • We don’t have to defend ourselves and we don’t have to defend God
  • The enemy’s “go-to” play from his playbook as old as the Garden of Eden itself
  • The fact that the friends had long since decided how they would respond

This Week’s Challenge

Read Daniel 3 in context — meaning start in chapter 1 and read all the way through chapter 3. Consider the historical context of this story. Perhaps even complete additional study on the historical details. Ask yourself how you would respond in this situation. Decide today that you will remain faithful even if God doesn’t choose to rescue you in the manner you desire.

Michelle I might start off by saying you’ll never believe this but somehow I think you will. I was on the way home today from the hospital visiting my husband. He has has extensive cancer surgery. The song “Even if” came on KLove radio. I focused on the message intently. The ending words “it is well with my soul” are gripping when you know the amazing story behind them. Talk about dying to self!! To top it off I downloaded your podcast to know more later on and smiled my “Its a God thing” smile when I discovered you were in Daniel. This is our very study at my church right now!!! I am at the place where my faith in God and acceptance of His Will converge. The “even if” is on my tail as if I’m trying to outrun it. God is sovereign. If my faith is true then the fiery furnace can’t consume. Like Peter once he focused on his problem and lost sight of Jesus he began to panic. The answers as you mentioned my not be what we want or prayed for. That is my fear in my circumstances. That is where Jesus is with us. It is comforting and well with my soul knowing He is is control. I’m so grateful for your teaching on the message of this song and of your website. May God bless you abundantly.

    • Julie, what a beautiful testimony of God’s love for you. He pursues us. His standards are high, but His grace is wide. When I’m in the thick of it, it is hard to believe that what we’re going through are “light and momentary troubles,” but your faith will be rewarded. It is no “coincidence” that God is tying all of these things together. And might I add…they are more meaningful to you now than any good book or sermon could reveal…God has revealed Himself to you in a way that is distinctly YOURS in this moment.
